Overview

The Second Affiliated Hospital and Yuying Children's Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) is a tertiary Grade A general hospital providing lifecycle healthcare for children and adults. Founded in 1976, the hospital was first named Bethune Clinic of Wenzhou Medical College. It was rebuilt into the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical College (WMC) in 1982 under the approval of the Health Bureau of Zhejiang Province. In 1988, the name of Children’s Hospital was added to the hospital, which was renamed in 1991 The Affiliated Yuying Children’s Hospital of WMC when Mr. He Chaoyu, a Taiwan compatriot, donated a new building for the children’s hospital. The hospital was approved as a provincial tertiary Grade A hospital in 1995. In 2005, the hospital merged Wenzhou Cardiovascular Hospital as its Nanpu campus. In April 2009, the Orthopedic Hospital in the Second Affiliated Hospital of WMC and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital in the Second Affiliated Hospital of WMC were established. In 2013, the hospital was renamed “The Second Affiliated Hospital and Yuying Children’s Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University” till now.


Currently, the hospital has three campuses, namely, Longwan Campus (including the Rehabilitation Center), Lucheng Campus (including Xueyuan Road Branch and Nanpu Branch), and Oujiangkou Campus. Among them, the Longwan Campus is a medical center for adults and focuses on oncology and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases; the Lucheng Campus focuses on obstetrics & gynecology and pediatrics; and the Oujiangkou Campus mainly focuses on orthopedics and trauma. According to the rankings of Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) 2022, 8 disciplines entered the national Top 50 and 26 disciplines entered the national Top 100. The hospital ranked 76th nationwide in the five-year Accumulation Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (ASTEM).


Among 4983 hospital employees, there are 757 with senior professional titles and 258 postgraduate supervisors, including 41 doctoral supervisors. Many excellent faculty and staff were selected in the national and provincial talent programs.


The hospital embraces 3 specialties under the National Construction Project of Key Clinical Specialty, 1 under the National Key Construction Specialty of The State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 4 Zhejiang Provincial Primary Disciplines of Clinical Medicine (Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology), 2 Provincial Key Supported Disciplines, 1 Provincial Innovation Team, 12 Provincial Key Supported and Innovation Disciplines, 8 Key Provincial Disciplines and Specialties of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 3 Provincial Key Laboratories, 2 Provincial Key Laboratories of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 Provincial Clinical Research Center, 1 Provincial Engineering Research Center, and 2 Provincial International Cooperation Bases for Scientific and Technological Cooperation. The anesthesiology research team has published research results in the top medical journal JAMA (IF=56.27). Besides, the hospital has won a second prize of the State Science and Technology Award and 1 Major National Science and Technology Project.


As the Second School of Medicine of WMU, the school currently offers 8 majors, including Clinical Medicine, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Rehabilitation Therapy, Clinical Medicine (5+3), Clinical Medicine (5+3, Pediatrics), and Clinical Medicine (5+3, Anesthesiology). The school has 4 Primary Category Discipline PhD Programs and 13 Primary Category Discipline Master Programs. It serves as a practice base for both undergraduate and postgraduate overseas students of clinical medicine in WMU, thus establishing an all-round, multi-level talent development system encompassing the education of undergraduate, master, doctor, post-doctor, post-graduation, and overseas students. The hospital has created its unique resident standardized training model with characteristics of “hierarchical progression, spiral rise, post responsibility, and strengthen supervision.” Currently, it has 22 national resident standardized training bases, 3 key resident standardized training bases, and 4 specialist standardized training bases.
